Concrete is a versatile material that has been used by interior designers for commercial construction for years. It can be molded, tinted, stamped and polished to look like a variety of other surfaces. This makes it a unique material for the floors in your home. When planning major remodeling projects in your home, consider using concrete to create some unique eye-catching floor designs.

Kitchen

Concrete suppliers can tint the concrete to match the color of your kitchen cabinets or major appliances. Before the concrete has completely set, stencils are used to create a grid pattern on the floor that resembles tiles. A darker stain is applied to the lines made on the concrete to look like grout. Once the concrete has set, a clear resin is applied to the surface and polished to a high gloss. The result is a floor that looks like it has been newly tiled.

Dining Room

After the tinted concrete floor has been poured, swirls and veins of color are applied to look like the highlights in a marble floor. A clear resin is applied and the floor is polished to a high gloss. The floor will look like it was made from a single piece of fine marble.

Bathroom

A white concrete floor is poured. Stencils are used to create tiny squares or hexagons on the floor to resemble tile. A darker wash is applied to the floor to make the stenciled lines stand out. Decorative stamps can then be used to put impressions in random tiles for accent. The floor is coated with a clear resin to protect it from moisture and then polished to a high gloss.

Hallways

You can create a hallway floor that becomes a conversation piece in your home. The floor is first poured and tinted with the preferred color. Before the concrete sets, small objects are pushed lightly into the concrete. Some of the objects you can use include marbles, pieces of colored glass, seashells and old coins. Once the concrete is set, a thick layer of transparent resin is poured over the floor and polished to a high gloss. The result is a floor in which the objects appear to float in the floor below people as they walk across it.

Patio and Deck Surfaces

Concrete can also be made to look like wood and stone for dramatic effects outdoors. Concrete that is tinted to look like wood is first poured in the area. Stencils are then used to create the wood grain look of natural lumber. A poured concrete floor can also be carved and tinted to look like natural stone or bricks.
